Baker Artist Awards 2017 & 2018
From September 7, 2018 — October 14, 2018
The Greater Baltimore Cultural Alliance
(GBCA) and the William G. Baker, Jr. Memorial
Fund celebrates its 10th anniversary with
an exhibition of works by 2017 awardees
David Marion (Visual Art) and Sara Dittrich
(Inter-disciplinary) and 2018 awardees Amy
Sherald (Visual Art) and Abraham Burickson
(Inter-disciplinary).
Each year, one artist per
discipline (Visual, Literary, Film/Video,
Performance, Inter-disciplinary, Music) receives
a $10,000 Mary Sawyers Baker Prize. Of these
artists, one is selected to receive the Mary
Sawyers Imboden Prize, a $30,000 award.
Combined, the Baker and Imboden Prizes offer
the largest art prize in the region at $40,000.
Awardees are selected by an anonymous jury
from more than 900 Baltimore-region artists
who created a free, online portfolio at
bakerartist.org. Selected artists exemplify a
mastery of craft, depth of artistic exploration,
and a unique compelling vision.
Organized by Assistant Curator for Media Arts and Live Events Claudia Mattos.
The Baker Artist Portfolios and associated awards were established and are funded by the William G. Baker, Jr. Memorial Fund and are a program of the Greater Baltimore Cultural Alliance.
The 2017 and 2018 winners of the $10,000 Mary Sawyers Baker Prize present arresting and poignant examples of their works—diverse in subject matter and media.
