Prints, Drawings & Photographs

Considered one of the most significant holdings of works on paper in the country, the BMA’s renowned collection of 65,000 works on paper includes 4,000 drawings and 4,000 photographs from the late 15th century to the present, making it a comprehensive resource for the study of European and American printmaking.

Major strengths include 16th- and 17th-century prints and woodcuts by Albrecht Dürer and Rembrandt van Rijn, 19th-century French drawings by Honoré Daumier and Édouard Manet, and 20th-century street photography.

Works on Paper

Two major collections form the core of the BMA’s holdings of works on paper.

The collection of Baltimore industrialist and banker T. Harrison Garrett features works by Albrecht Dürer, Francisco Goya, and Rembrandt van Rijn among more than 20,000 engravings, etchings, and woodcuts ranging from the late 15th century through the late 19th century.

The George A. Lucas Collection is one of the most significant resources in the United States for the study of 19th-century French art. An expatriate from Baltimore who spent five decades in Paris, Lucas amassed nearly 20,000 works on paper by artists including:

Photography

The Gallagher/Dalsheimer collection features 20th-century American street photography and an exceptional group of experimental European photographs made between the wars. Photographers represented in depth include:

French Drawings Online Collections

The BMA and the Walters Art Museum have catalogued their collections of 19th-century French drawings in a searchable online database, making approximately 900 rarely displayed works accessible to scholars and the public.

Because prints, drawings, and photographs are sensitive to light, they may only be shown for short periods of time. When not on view in special exhibitions or rotations that complement work in other media in the collection galleries, the BMA's holdings of works on paper may be seen by appointment in the Samuel H.
