Join the musical master craftsman Abu the Flutemaker for an interactive performance of a selection of his hand-made instruments. "I can make a musical instrument out of anything!" exemplifies his life-long approach to experimenting with and creating instruments out of found objects. See and hear about his work, and then join him for an improv group performance. After the performance, feel free to stick around and learn more about Abu’s instruments and purchase one for yourself.

This free event will be held on the front steps outside the BMA's Historic Merrick Entrance. In case of inclement weather, the performance will take place inside the BMA's Commons.

The alter-ego of classical and jazz pianist Kevin Gift is Baltimore’s Wendel Patrick, praised by The Baltimore Sun as “wildly talented.” The recording and internationally touring artist currently teaches hip hop production at The Peabody Music Conservatory.

The BMA is honored to be among the international institutions debuting the director's cut version of Solange Knowles' When I Get Home. The interdisciplinary performance art film is the companion film to Knowles’ latest album and an exploration of origin and spiritual expedition. Through a futurist rodeo that lifts up the narrative of black cowboys and honors Knowles’ Houston lineage, the film confronts how much of us have we taken or left behind in our evolutions, and how much fear determines this. When I Get Home features Knowles’ new sculptural work Boundless Body—a rodeo arena displayed in the desert of Marfa, Texas, sitting alongside many architectural wonders, such as the Rothko Chapel at the Menil Collection and the I. M. Pei designed Dallas City Hall. The extended version of When I Get Home premieres across renowned museums and contemporary arts institutions across the U.S. and Europe from July 17 – October 13, 2019.

Keith Calhoun and Chandra McCormick’s poignant photographs and videos on view through October 27 in Slavery, The Prison Industrial Complex , shed light on the exploitative practices of the Louisiana State Penitentiary known as Angola. Join the artists for a discussion on issues surrounding mass incarceration with prison rights advocate Norris Henderson, founder of Voice of the Experienced, and Baltimore-native Monica Cooper of the Maryland Justice Project and the driving force behind Baltimore’s “Ban the Box” legislation. The conversation will be moderated by Annie Anderson of the Eastern State Penitentiary Historic Site. Arrive early for special evening access to Slavery, The Prison Industrial Complex from 5 – 6:30 p.m.

FoMaCA Members are invited to an exclusive visit to Glenstone, an extraordinary museum featuring the iconic examples of modern and contemporary art from the collection of founders Emily and& Mitch Rales. Located along the Potomac River in scenic Montgomery County, Glenstone seamlessly integrates art, architecture, and landscape into a serene and contemplative environment. Guides will be stationed throughout the art spaces to engage with visitors on the art, architecture, and landscape. A group lunch will be held in the café before returning to the BMA.
