Over the next two years, the BMA will complete a series of exciting capital projects supported by the In a New Light Campaign.

This ambitious transformation began with the successful opening of the renovated Contemporary Wing in November 2012. In the fall of 2014, the Museum will celebrate the new presentation of the American collection in the renovated Dorothy McIlvain Scott American Wing, housed in the BMA’s historic 1929 building designed by acclaimed American architect John Russell Pope. The reopening of the elegant Merrick Entrance will be an exciting civic moment as the BMA opens its front doors to visitors for the first time in thirty years. And the reopening of the dynamically renovated 1982 East Wing Lobby and Zamoiski Entrance will offer exciting new visitor amenities and a new BMA Shop.

In 2015, the BMA will complete the renovations with the reinstallation of the African and Asian collections and the unveiling of a new learning and creativity center.

This multi-year, $28 million renovation project has received $21.7 million in support through the In a New Light Campaign, including $11.25 million in capital contributions from the State of Maryland and $2.95 million in bond support from the City of Baltimore. In addition, prestigious regional and national grants from the France-Merrick Foundation, the Middendorf Foundation, the Joseph and Harvey Meyerhoff Family Charitable Funds, the Henry Luce Foundation, National Endowment for the Arts, National Endowment for the Humanities, and the Institute for Museum and Library Services are providing support for the renovation, reinstallation, and operation of galleries for contemporary, American, African, and Asian art.

The architect for the final phase of the renovation is the Baltimore-based architecture firm Ziger/Snead. The contractor is the Whiting-Turner Contracting Company of Towson, Maryland, and the project manager is Synthesis, Inc., of Columbia, Maryland.

“The BMA will begin its second century a transformed museum ready to welcome and inspire a new generation of visitors.”
